FAQ’s for Community Access

Q: WHAT KINDS OF ACTIVITIES WILL I DO IN COMMUNITY ACCESS?
A: The purpose of Community Access is to help people be included in community activities as part of their daily life. Since Morningside is focused on jobs, our Community Access activities are designed to be the first step in obtaining employment and might include activities such as short term volunteer work in the community.

Q HOW DOES COMMUNITY ACCESS WORK?
A: Our professional staff will meet with you and help figure out what interests you have or would like to explore. We then identify short-term volunteer opportunities in the community. Once a volunteer job is identified, a job coach will go with you to support the training given by the volunteer work site. A job coach will check every week to monitor your success and problem-solve if needed.

Q: DO I GET PAID FOR COMMUNITY ACCESS?
A: No. In Community Access, we usually set up volunteer jobs. If you are going to earn money, then your program would be changed to Individual Supported Employment.

Q: WHAT IF I WANT SOMEONE TO TAKE ME SHOPPING INSTEAD OF HELPING ME WITH A
VOLUNTEER JOB?
A: There are several agencies in Thurston and Mason counties that offer Community Access and it is important you choose one that best meets your needs. Since Morningside’s focus is employment, all of our services support that goal. In Lewis County, you should discuss your goals with your DD Case Manager so it can be determined how to best meet your needs.
